Women’s World Cup and Gender Inequality Data Dashboard

This data dashboard project was for a hackathon and demonstrates my abilities with Tableau. I had three days to select a public dataset, create a visualization using Tableau, receive feedback on it from judges, then implement the feedback.

I’m a huge soccer fan and I thought it would be interesting to look at the Women’s World Cup and gender equality to see if any insights could be gleaned. I formed a hypothesis that there would be correlation between the number of goals scored and the UN gender inequality index, since nations with low gender inequality should have stronger women’s sports programs, infrastructure, and teams, and result in more goals scored at the Women’s World Cup.

I first needed to update the dataset I found with the most recent goals/stats, as the dataset I found only went through 2019. I located the 2023 stats and incorporated them into the dataset.

I then located the gender inequality index data from the United Nations website and joined it to the World Cup dataset using Tableau.

After some exploratory data analysis, I constructed a data dashboard which can be viewed by clicking on the button below.

I concluded there was not the strong connection between goals scored and gender inequality index score I expected. This is likely due to a limited number of countries qualifying for the Women’s World Cup and therefore included in the analysis.

If given more time, I could have expanded the analysis to include more countries that did not make it to the World Cup (and given them zero goals scored). I also could have examined changes in a country’s gender inequality index and how that is (or isn’t) reflected in their goals scored.

In closing, I’m not surprised at this result. Clearly I’m oversimplifying goals scored at the Women’s World Cup and gender inequality, which is a complex issue with many causes and effects. Gender inequality is a problem most nations (including the US) continue to struggle with regardless of their World Cup success.
